The path to a joyful life often begins with examining and healing parts of ourselves that we often want to hide. In Japan, there is an art form called kintsukuroi which means “to repair with gold.” When ceramic pieces would break, the artisan would put the shards together again using gold or silver lacquer to create something stronger and more beautiful than it was before. We often try to hide or compartmentalize the inevitable breaks and scars that come from living, but every crack is a part of our history and trying to hide it away in a box or trying not to think about it doesn’t work for long. Therapy is the gold and silver lacquer that can begin our healing. We can embrace every aspect that has grown with us over the years and find ways to flourish.
